The deed has been completed - a $20,000 Porsche has been secured - but let me tell you, it was no easy feat. Naturally, finding a car was the easiest part, which wasn't easy in its own right. After finding a car, is when the real fun
began. The first car I went to look at, was a mere 7 hour drive into the heart of North Carolina - after a lot of back and forth with the seller - I had a clear expectation on what the car would be. Upon arrival to the gentlemans house, I was met with sheer dismay and disappointment over what I found. The car was expressed to be in extremely good condition - upon arrival I found this to not be the case. The body had severe damage, non-repairable damage. Not without some actual body work at least. The car had none of the service records the gentleman claimed to have, and overall the car was just in bad shape. It was a shame, as I came down with money to purchase the car and left without the car.
Onwards and upwards I thought - as I headed back home with my tail between my legs I was feeling unoptimistic - that is until I went to the bank to redeposit the check for the car. I get a message on facebook, and guess what! The person who contacted me had a 2007 Cayman ripe and ready to be sold. He was asking $19,000! Perfect!
I leave work, and head another 4 hours to the middle of Virgnia - to find another car... not quite as described. So, I made an offer at $13,000 for the car... after some shrewd negotiations, we ended up right in the middle of $19,000 & $13,000... at $13,000! I went and got the cash, and started my drive home in my new to me 2007 Cayman. The car hadn't been serviced in 5 years, and needed a real going through - so after $4,000 or so, I have a fully functioning Cayman for $18,000!
She still needs some tweaks, but the car is an absolute unit to drive, the beauty of a good Porsche is the fact that after some servicing these cars come right back to life as if they were new! The car hums down the road no problem!
I adore this car, nothing feels better than a sorted Porsche, and it just goes to show that with $20,000 and a dream, you can get into a car like this. Granted, it's no 911 and it's not new, but it's mine & I own it free and clear. I couldn't be happier since the departure of my first Porsche, a 2008 Cayman S... There is much more to come with this car in the coming months, as of course I can not leave it stock... these dinky wheels have to go, the exhaust has to go, and the suspension has to go! But soon enough, it will be my perfect car!
